Sher Ali Tareen

Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies, Franklin and Marshall College

SherAli Tareen is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on Muslim intellectual traditions and debates in early modern and modern South Asia. Her book, Defending Muhammad in Modernity (University of Notre Dame Press, 2020), received the 2020 American Institute of Pakistan Studies Book Award and was selected as a finalist for the 2021 American Academy of Religion Book Award. Her second book, Perilous Intimacies: Debating Hindu-Muslim Friendship after Empire, was published in Columbia University Press’ prestigious Religion, Culture, and Public Life series in 2023. She has published in a variety of academic journals, including Journal of Law and Religion, Muslim World, Political Theology, Islamic Studies, Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, ReOrient. She also co-hosts the popular podcast New Books in Islamic Studies, which features interviews with authors of important new books in Islamic Studies.
